IMG_3490

lately I’ve been overwhelmed
overwhelmed by news of yet another mass shooting
overwhelmed by total depravity
and it’s manifestation in the stories I hear everyday
overwhelmed by just stuff, we all have stuff

I’ve bowed out of an urban ministry, a fabulous urban ministry
I’ve bowed out of small group because I just can’t
see my own kids less than I do now
I’ve taken a personal day to do laundry, clean, and grocery shop
it’s just life and at times it’s hard….for everybody

I’m trying to simplify, trying to find beauty

IMG_3504

and beauty is there, in the hard, in the everyday

I’ve been searching for a replacement door for the mudroom/ craft area for a while now. I even found one at a habitat re-store that I conned the hubs into installing…. only it was 2 inches too short.

Retail would be special order $$$ since our home was built in the fabulous 80s….

enter into a little gift of grace, a neighbor gave us the exact door I’ve been searching for, for free
I was singing “Shiny Happy People” from REM thus the mustardy-yellow submariney hue, it makes me shiny happy

home

IMG_3408

this weekend, we spent some time on my parents’ farm

IMG_3411

I felt the salt soak back into my soul

IMG_3409

the big boys worked on the carriage house electricity

IMG_3417

the little boys worked in the gravel pile

IMG_3406

there was birthday cake, yard sell milkglass, laughing with my aunts, demolition derby (Joe took one for the team by taking our kids while I watched HGTV with my mama), a hayride and blackberry cobbler

IMG_3419

there’s no place like home

yardsell guru

IMG_3400

my mom is the yard sell guru of the world
she recently gifted us with this awesome table

IMG_3401

wooden bowl and pool balls (that just sounds so wrong) were other recent finds

this lady has the yard sale magic!

Graham decided that he really wanted to go to Lego Land in Atlanta for his birthday

IMG_3352

we may have driven for six hours….

IMG_3358

put in a 13 hour day of family time, lost our car for a bit in the parking garage, and Joey may have spent hour 12 explaining the difference between the speed of light and speed of sound to our very overextended kiddos….

IMG_3366

but it was all worth it to make this guy happy!

Graham, you make me laugh on a daily basis, you like to make spirital analogies to Chima legos, you are so afraid of green beans and corn, and you always give me a kissing hand. I love you so. Watching you and Ava grow is my greatest joy.

we were informed that it would be ill-advised to use our plumbing for only the first five hours of the day due to pipe replacement being done by the city

alrighty then, we headed out for breakfast, shopping, and a movie

and we come home to um, well complications from said pipe replacement…
so I follow the instructions left by contractors

and when that doesn’t work, I flag down a worker…
who quickly dismisses me and lets me know that I am probably unaware of additional drains in my basement (NEGATIVE, dude) and perhaps I didn’t properly flush (WHAT is wrong with this guy!)

I hate to be underestimated and especially by a chauvinist with a mullet, knee-deep in waste

one glass of wine and a call to a supervisor and problem solved:
no Y chromosome needed!

IMG_3338

a cobbler with Greenback blackberries helped make the day right again

we just celebrated year three in our current home

IMG_3313

in her honor we gave the entry way, stairs, and landing a fresh coat of paint, new rug, and light fixture

IMG_3311

the front door got a new glossy black face lift as well

so here’s the tally for our misadventures in home improvement in year three:

new paint and updates in three bedrooms (fourth bedroom still in dire need of some love)

three baths with new floors, paint, fixtures, ect.

new paint in dining room (horrible carpet remains but will be eliminated soon!)

chevron bookshelves in living room

craft/wet bar demo and laundry room expansion (my all time fav)

landscaping and tree house out back

new kitchen paint and better but still not great counter top refresher

we fall a bit more in love with this home with every change
it’s quirky and imperfect and the right fit for us
I’m excited to see what changes year four has in store

(here is a totally unrelated pic of my mint simple syrup, equally fabulous in tea or mojitos)

I recently finished the Rules of Civility by Amor Towles. I have to say it’s a quintessential summer read- thanks for the recommendation Jey! It has rich characterisation, several plot twists, and the overall theme of how we reinvent ourselves and at what cost that reinvention comes.

My 83-year-old grandfather just walked the aisle and said, “I do” for the fifth time. I wish the tough old bird and his new bride the best. Reinvention strikes again.

As I was painting my foyer and stairwell today, I thought much about identity and how we define ourselves. I couldn’t help but play a bit of what if:

what if I was a librarian with a goth look and a granny chic dress, sporting a Hello Kitty tatoo and a chip on my shoulder….

what if I was in academia and plagued by large stretches of monotony followed by political subterfuge and betrayal….

and that was when I determined I like my suburban life with my two kids, the hubs, and my school pycho, tatoo free life, no reinvention required. Thank you Benjamin Moore and Amor Towels.
