Archive for June, 2011

So my parents have had a little project in the works with my younger sis and her hubby.  A tree farm on the family farm complete with tree house.

Thing is about tree farms is Christmas trees take oh about seven years to mature.  So this year will be the first year of Sycamore Springs Tree Farm!  Until Thanksgiving weekend 2011 opening, we’ll just use the party porch.

A little birthday barbecue for 45.

Catered by my dad.  True Grit’s John Wayne has nothing on my dad.   He’s honest, strong, and generous.  Happy almost Father’s Day!

And my mom, in the tree house kitchen, who really did win the Betty Crocker award in highschool.  I have seen the trophy and may or may not be planning on stealing it.

The kids had a little trouble with the corn hole.

But they were all about the hay ride.

Good times at the Tree House and Party Porch were had by all!

So things have been a little wild around here with new little shop and A’s swim team EVERY day.  I cook most nights but lunch is a free for all of pb&j, leftovers, and drive throughs.  But Hubs is off work and handling swim team so I decided to surprise my crew with a real meal.  They were shocked.  Meet the cast of characters:

The marinade (Olive oil, apple cider vinegar, garlic salt, soy sauce, Worcestershire, lime, and horseradish)

Flank steak cut across the grain

    Cute carrots from the garden

Sweet red pepper and Broccoli slaw- my kids have no idea this is in fact broccoli

Archer Farm Brand asparagus risotto (amazing-you must try this)

One- Brown the meat and set aside.

Two- add veggies and marinade

Three-add a Tlbs. or so cornstarch

  Let it simmer, baby.

Yum and I’m off the hook for supper!

So y’all remember Miss May, she’s the key lime mini cupcake.  Well to be more precise, she’s white cake filled with home-made key lime curd, topped with key lime butter cream, iridescent sugar, and lime zest.  She had her first paid public appearance yesterday.  I’m the proud stage mom, except not really cause those pageant moms freak me out (no offense, if that’s your kind of thing).  Anyway, if you missed her at the grand opening, you can catch her at Homespun’s sidewalk sale on June 25th or feel free to contact me about having her over.  She’s a party girl!

 Remember this?

Now it looks like this.

And this, Which made me hungry.

So I gathered the troops.

For this:  Happiness is a tomato, basil, mayo sandwich.

Only better if we had bacon in the house, yes pig flesh, sooo tasty.  I like to live on the edge.

Flashback to February

Each year our church hosts a valentine banquet for couples.  Different people host a table and provide the china.  It honestly wasn’t something  I wanted to do.  Then I started pulling out china from the far reaches of my cabinets and playing with burlap.  Major fun ensued.  A casual comment from a friend at the banquet spurred a little hope.  A hope that maybe the fluffy stuff, the stuff I love to do but isn’t at all what I spent 6+ years in grad school for, is significant.  Not change the world significant, but significant in bringing joy to my life.  Thanks friend.

Saturday was our neighborhood yard sale.  Up at four am does not a happy Kelley make.  The absolute highlight was watching my children become passionate capitalists.  My son, who is at times painfully shy, chased people walking up our street saying, “I am the lemonator “and “we have cookies, cookies all day.”    My daughter politely thanked her customers then would add with a little grin, “be sure and tell all your friends”.   I found some fun little treasures but these won’t be finding their way to the shop.

Don’t think creepy garage, think mojitos on the back porch.  I scored this fun drink cart for $5.

Before

During

After, not too shabby for $10.

I’ve been spending  a lot of time pool side for this for this sweet girl.  Every day.

Four hour meets, who knew?

I did manage to spend a little time with my favorite pirate last night.  Which brings me to the design issue at hand:  I have to say I’m a firm believer in NO eye make-up for men.  However, Captain Jack Sparrow can use my eyeliner anytime.  Just saying.

Day 4 of mommy and me summer fun.  I love that I get to be a stay at home mom for eight weeks in the summer!  It’s also much harder than working with hundreds of other children for 10 months during the school year.  After several meltdowns, a few even from the kids, I decided to whip this up for our kitchen.  I painted a canvas and used Ava’s leftover school glue to adhere scrapbook letters.  It reads:  Thompson Family Rules, Be Kind, Be Respectful, Listen & Obey the first time.  One large iced tea and a little crafty, and I’m refocused on Summer Lovin’ these babies that are gifts from God.   It’s crooked and streaky but perfect for our family- much like design narrative.

Today we went to church, had brunch at Lakeside Tavern, and came home for long afternoon naps.  Great day.  I’m still riding the high from the opening yesterday.  I wanted to show you the little happy that followed me home from the shop yesterday.  That scale needed a good home, really it did.  The globes were rescued from a trash pile last week.  The burlap (almost a yard for .90 in remnant bin) is covering an unfortunate flaw of a Geo Safari box on the white globe, but hey we all have our issues.  The blue milkglass was found in my aunt Becky’s basement and belonged to my grandmother Mildred.  Becky said, “Take it, it would be beautiful with lemons in it.”  Good call, and good grief I have the best aunties in the world!  The roses are one of my favorite flowers from yesterday’s sip and see.

Another favorite (along with his sister) below with said scale preping for a new Sunday night tradition called Devo and Dessert- thank you Miss Ginger at CCPC!

Grand Opening of Design Narrative

Design Narrative

It started out with 144 mini key lime cupcakes and some girl in Fresh Market rambling to anyone who would listen about the antique mall down the street, oh wait that was me.

How could it not be a blast with this girl as your business partner?

A little shout out to the Farragut Primary Girls (sister Lyster had left the building).

Our first real, big girl, not related to us, customer!  She said she would be back!

Two ladies asked if I did catering.  Thanks girls, you are so good for my ego!

My stunning friend Yvette and her equally stunning daughters.

Emma, sweet, beautiful Emma.

Ava and Graham ran quality control on the cupcakes.

My mom, the original Betty Crocker, grand duchess of yard sale finds, and the source of any homemaking skills I have, oh and for reals my hero.

It was a great day!  Thanks Becca, Yvette, Rachel, Elizabeth, girl from church with the cute shoes but I don’t know your name-Sorry, Julia, Mary, Lisa, Robin, Kristen, Caroline, Kacee, Joey, Ava, Graham, Priscilla, & Emma!  Kelley
